Rowland’s 5th Birthday
We have just celebrated our 5th Birthday by throwing a fantastic, fun coffee morning here in Rowland’s. Young People overseen the serving of soup, tea, coffee and tasty traybakes as well as joining in some party games. We raised £107.51 and this will go towards our Summer Programme ‘Rowland’s Roadshow’.
Thank You to all who came along and supported us and to those who baked those lovely treats!
Here is to another fun filled year in Rowland’s…

The WorkWise Cafe Students
The students from the WorkWise cafe from Borders College enjoyed a break today to enjoy their Christmas lunch. The students serve light lunches every Tuesday and Wednesday between 12 and 1pm during term time in Rowland’s to give them valuable work experience.
There are two groups, one group on a Tuesday and the other group on a Wednesday.
The students prepare and cook all the food and enjoy serving customers! They have their own website : www.rowlandscafe.yolasite.com so have a look for some more information.
Cooking Creations
‘Cooking Creations’ at Rowland’s would like to thank Sainsbury’s for their sponsorship over the past few weeks. With support from the town’s local store we have been able to run a six-week session cooking project involving the young people within Rowland’s. They had the opportunity to better their life skills and widen their knowledge on food safety, menu design, folding napkins, handling money, silver service, orders and of course cooking! The young people also cooked and served some tasty lasagne for the workers, volunteers and Chair Person in Rowland’s with great success. A young person commented, “I learned lot’s of tip’s on food safety and how to design a menu and I really enjoyed how to learn to fold napkins. I will remember it so I will do it at some time in life at a point in time”. Julie would like to congratulate all the young people in completing their sessions with such dedication and commitment. A big thank you to both Eileen and Stacey, as this would not have been possible without their hard work and contributions.
Monster Month of Music!
November was ‘Monster Month of Music’ in partnership with Impact – we were involved in running music through the month of November including music workshops including singing, guitar, piano and creative writing. Many thanks to Michael Traynor from Impact, Maggie Elliot (Creative Writing), and everyone else who helped out. The gig night at Connections was fantastic! The band ‘Basement’ were fab – and you can find them on facebook…as well as the others who braved the microphone! The Open Mic Night had to be postponed…so watch this space for a new date!
The Wall of Respect.
Some of the dance from ‘Respectacular’….
Respectacular!
Rowland’s had a fantastic 4 week summer programme this year! Really amazing. Big thank you to Studio On The Green – Jenna – for the dance workshops – Ronnie – for his fab filming and teaching everyone how to V-J!! And Sara for the amazing art workshops. We made a film based on ‘Respect’ and how young people are seen and want to be seen in their community.
Unfinished Picture Project
We are working with the Middle East in a project to try and broaden horizons and knowledge of the outside world. Through the use of media with the Unfinished Picture Project we hope to learn about the ways of the Middle East and teach them of ours. You can see what we’re doing to show them on our Unfinished Picture Project site.
